Indian Exports, Imports Post Double-Digit Increases

The value of cut and polished diamonds exported from India rose 18.67 percent from approximately $6.8 billion in the April to November period of 2004, to just over $8.1 billion from April to November 2005. Gemstone (non-diamond) jewelry exports rose 16.35 percent during the same period, while gold jewelry exports rose 2.39 percent and other jewelry exports rose 11.67 percent, for a net total gem and jewelry export increase of 14.69 percent.

Total imports, including rough diamonds, gold bar, raw pearls, findings, mountings, rough and polished colored gemstones, and more, rose more than 37 percent in 2005 over 2004.
