Jewelers Create Pieces with a Purpose

Staff -- JCK Online, 4/1/2005 2:00:00 AM

Recently, under the combined banners of AGTA, AGS, GIA, and ICGA, the jewelry industry responded to the tsunami disaster by establishing the Jewelry Industry Relief Fund.

A few more charitable projects:

The Kazanjian Foundation, Beverly Hills, Calif., which sponsors the Jewels for Charity program (see Jeweler's Notebook, JCK, March 2005, p. 102), has announced that it will match jewelry-industry donations to support victims of the December tsunami.

One-hundred percent of the money will be given in aid to survivors, in the form of medication, clothing, and shelter for those who have lost their homes and family members.

Donation checks should be made payable to the Kazanjian Foundation, earmarked "Sri Lanka Relief Project"; contact Michael Kazanjian at the Kazanjian Foundation headquarters, 9489 Dayton Way, Suite 300, Beverly Hills, CA 90210; (310) 278-0811; or visit www.jewelsforcharity.org. Donors will receive a tax-deductible receipt from the Kazanjian Foundation.

Stardust Diamonds, Los Angeles, and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation have partnered to raise money for the foundation through sales of a collection of pink-diamond ribbon jewelry designed and manufactured by Stardust.

The Rose Gold Natural Fancy Pink Diamond Ribbon comes in two sizes. Each includes a rose-gold chain to wear the ribbon as a pendant, but it can also be worn on a charm bracelet, available separately or Stardust will add, free upon request, an optional feature that converts it to a lapel pin.

"We're thrilled to offer men and women a way to display their support for breast-cancer awareness, while also raising money for the cause," said Stardust president Gall Raiman.

The large pink-diamond ribbon will retail for $4,000, the smaller version for $3,000. To reach all consumers who wish to donate, the charms will also be sold in rose gold with pink sapphires and a hand-engraved rose-gold surface, also available in small and large. Stardust will donate 10 percent of the ribbons' purchase price, with a guaranteed minimum donation of $10,000 to the Komen Foundation. Its goal is to raise $250,000.

The ribbons will be available to the public in fine jewelry stores from late August through October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Selected retail partners will promote the ribbons through local media and direct marketing, while Stardust Diamonds will promote them to national consumer media.
