Detection of Annealed Pinks and Blues

The Gemological Institute of America says it can detect a "vast majority" of the treated pink and blue fancy colored diamonds produced by the Bellataire company, which markets stones treated with General Electric's high pressure/high temperature (HPHT) process.
"We are cautiously optimistic they will be distinguishable," says GIA's Tom Moses. He notes that GIA has, with similar technology, created pink and blue diamonds. The institute is also looking at yellow diamonds that can be created with the annealing process.
Chuck Meyer, Bellataire's managing director, says the pink and blue diamonds represent a small fraction of GE's overall production and are not expected to be readily available commercial items.
Recently, the Gübelin Gem Lab made major progress in detecting the HPHT-annealed colorless stones.
