Frank Dallahan, former publisher of JCK, is urging jewelry retailers to participate in the first JCK financial benchmarking study of the jewelry industry.

The project, called "Profit Master," is a joint effort of JCK&/> magazine and Business Resources Services (BRS), a Seattle, Wash., business consulting agency that provides financial and management training programs, products, and services to business owners, managers and their advisors.

The project has two components.

First, all jewelry retailers can participate by completing financial data forms and returning them to BRS, Dallahan says. The forms are available on the JCK Web site.

"The information you provide is absolutely confidential and will be merged with hundreds of other jewelers' data to provide a financial picture of the independent retail jewelry business," Dallahan says. "As a participant you will receive a complimentary copy of the group study. And if you wish, you may also request a detailed study for your business for a nominal charge."

Second, jewelry retailers can participate in "performance groups" at various locations throughout the country. The first performance group meeting will be held in the Chicago area on August 25-27.

"There are two components to this program," Dallahan says. "The first two days are educational sessions dealing with retail jewelry case studies. This is real-world experience, not some academic pie-in-the-sky theory. It is material you will be able to use immediately when you return to your store. The cost to participate is $595."

He continues, "The second component to Profit Mastery Plus is the opportunity for you to have a one-on-one consulting review of your business with Steve Hegg, one of BRS's principals."

The deadline to qualify for a one-on-one counseling session is Monday, Aug. 16.

For more information or to make a reservation to participate please call Laurie Owen or Kathy Hastings at (800) 488-3520.

"I have personally attended many seminars over the course of my business career. Most are general in nature because they pull from a diverse audience," Dallahan says. "What is unique about the Profit Mastery Program is that it is focused directly on retail jewelers and the business of jewelry retailing."
