The Gemological Institute of America has created a free, interactive online gemstone tutorial for the general public. "How to Buy a Gemstone in 7 Simplified Steps" introduces the public to gems in a format designed to be educational and entertaining. Users learn about the factors that affect gemstone values along with history, lore, and care of 20 popular gemstones.
A virtual gemologist guides visitors through seven challenges, encouraging them to use virtual gemological tools to learn about the "four Cs" of colored-gemstone grading. Visitors also can set gemstones into mountings, shine a penlight to reveal phenomenal gems, and use a loupe to find inclusions.
