GIA OPENS PUBLIC MUSEUM GALLERY

Staff -- JCK Online, 10/1/2000 2:00:00 AM

The Gemological Institute of America opened a public Museum Gallery at its world headquarters in Carlsbad, Calif., in April. The gallery is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The featured exhibits include unpublished photomicrographs by GIA's chief gemologist, John Koivula, G.G., a renowned gemstone inclusion photographer and author. Another exhibit showcases sculptures and jewelry from the Michael M. Scott collection. Included in this collection are pieces by internationally recognized lapidary artist Bernd Munsteiner of Idar-Oberstein, Germany and metalsmith John Marshall of Seattle.

In a showcase at the entrance to the gallery is the world's largest fashioned gemstone, a quartz weighing more than 200 lbs containing a whirwind of golden rutile needles.
