Jeweler Charged With Violating Gold Buying Laws

By JCK Online Staff -- JCK Online, 5/18/2009 3:59:00 PM

Another jeweler has been charged with not following local rules for buying precious metals.

Uori Zohar, 52, was charged in Connecticut with 53 counts of violating previous metals and stones requirements, according to the Stamford Advocate.

Police charge that Zohar did not report all the purchases he made, as required by law.

In response to a similar case in California a few months back, Jewelers Vigilance Committee president and CEO Cecilia Gardner told JCK that jewelers needed to do the following things to insure compliance with local metals laws:

  • Contact your local Department of Consumer Affairs and find out the proper licensing requirements. These laws are local, not federal, and vary from state to state.

  • Every state requires anyone who buys secondhand jewelry to have a secondhand dealer license and to keep records of purchases.

  • If you buy more than $50,000 of jewelry a year, you will have to comply with the USA Patriot Act.
