Gem Pricing Report

Colored stone dealers report slightly improved market activity, which is concentrated in better-quality grades for most gems. Prices for some varieties are up 15–20 percent from last year, and there is solid demand for fine-quality emeralds. Recent production of richly colored, slightly bluish green Colombian emeralds has generated enthusiasm in the U.S. market. Prices for blue sapphire are stable, but pink and yellow sapphire varieties are edging higher after a brief leveling off. Supply is tight, and there’s little new production.
Competition overseas has strengthened much in recent years, and markets are realigning allegiances. Prices for natural, unenhanced corundum continue to improve on strong global demand and the resulting critical shortages.
Diamond dealers report shortages of clean 0.80 to 0.99 ct.rounds in the collection colors. Demand for clean, well- made rounds and princess cuts from 1.00 to 1.25 cts. in the collection colors also is strong. Supply of 2.00 ct. rounds has improved but demand is diminished slightly. Demand is very strong in 3.00+ ct. rounds and princess cuts of better color and clarity, and shortages are generating firm prices.
