Ever since the Jewelers Board of Appraisal Review (J-BAR) courses debuted in Las Vegas at The JCK Show, the Jeweler's Vigilance Committee (JVC) has sold more than 300. To date, more than 70 students have taken and passed the exam, says JVC executive director and general counsel Cecilia Gardner.

The elementary appraisal course provides valuation basics with an emphasis on the legal responsibilities and liabilities that face everyone in the appraisal industry.

J-BAR was established to provide support and education for appraisers and users of appraisal services. It sets minimum standards based on legal compliance and sound business practices. J-BAR standards and practices facilitate compliance with Federal Trade Commission Guidelines, which address deception and misrepresentation.
