Gem Pricing Report

By JCK Online Staff -- JCK Online, February 1, 2008

A soft economy and record gold prices have spawned caution in the gem market. But while the holiday season was marginal for many jewelry retailers, those near tourist destinations reported better sales, which apparently were fueled by international tourists attracted by the strength of the euro and other foreign currencies. Dealers expect the weaker dollar to attract more foreign buyers to the gem shows in Tucson, Ariz., and predict they will offset the expected lower turnout of buyers representing U.S. retailers.

Colored-stone dealers are optimistic about some new products, including bright red and pink-colored spinel from Tanzania, which is drawing international attention. The small deposit played out quickly, and dealers and collectors are actively trading the small amount of goods. Prices for 2.00 to 5.00 ct. stones were $550 to $2,000 per carat wholesale, which is appreciably higher than three months ago. Prices for fine 10.00 ct. specimens have moved much higher since October. Spinel has arrived in style. That’s good news for U.S. retail jewelers, who are finding that fine colored stones can still trade at margins of keystone or better.
