Swiss jeweler Golay Buchel—now marketed simply as Golay—is building a new brand name for its cultured pearls of marketable quality. Peter Fischer, head of Golay Group's pearl division, has created the Golay Pearls Quality Label, which can be attached to any type of cultured pearl—including South Sea, akoya, freshwater, and keshi—that meets Golay's criteria for high quality in the areas of type, surface condition, luster, nacre, and color matching. Golay hopes the label will increase the confidence of consumers who may be reluctant to buy pearls because they're unable to judge their quality.
