Fashionably Precious

Platinum is challenging gold as the heavy metal of fashionable jewelry.

By Carrie Soucy, Senior Editor -- JCK Online, 4/1/2004 2:00:00 AM

Platinum is perhaps best known as a very popular metal for bridal jewelry, but it is increasingly being used in fashionable styles as well. Platinum's strength makes it a winner when paired with diamonds or other precious gems—giving consumers peace of mind knowing that their stones are safe—while its inherent luster makes it the metal of choice for the jewelry-savvy white-metal customer. It hasn't fully caught up to the volume of white gold sold in the fashion category, but considering the way platinum conquered the bridal category in little more than a decade, it may be just a matter of time before it dominates fashion, too.
