NORTHEAST

Marvin Soskil, president of Brett Harrison Jewelers, Melville, N.Y., was honored by the Long Island Breakfast Club for his contributions to the community, according to New York Newsday. Soskil has supported such organizations as Ronald McDonald House, National Hemophilia Foundation, Long Island Fight for Charity, and others.

New York State Jewelers Association, founded in 1909, will host its Centennial Anniversary celebration with a gala dinner on Saturday, July 25, at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in New York City.

Dalyah Duek-Flaks is opening a new jewelry store, Dalyah, on Madison Avenue in New York, TheNew York Times reports.

SOUTH

Fischer-Evans Jewelers, Chattanooga, Tenn., is celebrating its 140th anniversary this year. It was hailed in its local paper as one of the city's “grand old businesses.”

Henricks Jewelers, Bonita Springs, Florida, is going out of business and plans a 60-day liquidation of its $8 million inventory, say local press reports.

SOUTHEAST

James Blanck, a jeweler in Altamonte Springs, Fla., was placed on six months probation after pleading no contest to tax evasion, the local press reported.

WEST

A thief stole $8,900 worth of jewelry—two gold chains and two diamond studs—from Golden Diamond Jewelers, Red Bird, Texas, according to the Dallas Morning News. Police are investigating.

French Designer Jeweler, Scottsdale, Ariz., received the High Achievement Award for Best Designer Retailer of 2009 from the Contemporary Design Group at the AGTA show in Tucson.

Boxx Jewelers, Monrovia, Calif., founded in 1921, is closing, according to the Pasadena Independent. The clock in front of the building has received historic preservation status.

MASS MARKET

Signet Jewelers announced that its sales declined 8.8 percent to $3.34 billion in fiscal 2009. Same-store sales were down 8.2 percent for the year. In the United States, same-store sales were down 9.7 percent for the year, with a 16.1 percent drop in the fourth quarter.

Finlay Enterprises received notice from Nasdaq that its common stock will be removed from the exchange at the opening of the April 6 trading session.

INTERNATIONAL

Tiffany & Co. will open a new store in Amsterdam, Netherlands, in fall of 2009. The 2,100-square-foot store will be located in a historic building at 86-88 PC Hooftstraat, in the city's premier shopping area.
