The colored stone market enjoys good demand across a broad range of gemstones. Prices continue to firm for fine-quality ruby and sapphire in 2.00 ct. and larger. Visitors to the Tucson shows can expect good selection but higher prices for blue, pink, purple, yellow, and orange varieties. Exotic garnets and beryls are also poised for a good show. Although economic concerns still weigh on the minds of many retailers, sales expectations for colored stone jewelry look good. For many retailers, fine colored gemstones offer profits now lost in diamonds. An emerging focus on socially responsible mining and manufacturing is one development capturing attention.
Fashion trends have moved from large and gaudy back to traditional elegance. Pearls remain in high demand, and prices are stable to slightly higher in most categories. Improved quality of Tahitian pearls and the many colors and shapes of Chinese freshwater pearls are generating demand from retailers.
