David Trout, Coffin & Trout Fine Jewellers, 51

By JCK Online Staff -- JCK Online, 3/18/2009 3:20:00 PM

David Michael TroutDavid Michael Trout, founding partners of Coffin & Trout Fine Jewellers, Chandler, Ariz., died suddenly on March 15 while hiking. He was 51.

Trout and his friend of nearly 30 years, Randy Coffin, founded Coffin & Trout Fine Jewellers in 1984. Over the years, Trout’s creative designs garnered him numerous international design awards, including nine Spectrum Awards and The Gemological Institute of America’s “Best of the Best” exhibit.

Trout’s training began at an early age with his father, Marty Trout, who decided that stained glassmaking would be the key to keeping a strong connection with his son. In an entrepreneurial move—and with the support of his mother, Barbara Trout—father and son approached the owner of the local jewelry store in Rock Island, Ill., to see if he would be interested in selling their artwork. Not only did the owner agree, he eventually offered the young artist an apprenticeship position servicing watches. So at the age of 13, Trout began his entry into the jewelry business. The emerging designer wore many hats in the industry before finally meeting his business partner, Coffin, in 1979.

David was active in supporting his community. His most active and current role was as the president of Phoenix Suns Charities. He was passionate about the basketball team and the work that the Suns Charities does for the community.

Trout is survived by his parents, Marty and Barbara Trout of Phoenix, sisters Chris Womack of New Orleans, and Diane Overstreet of Iowa, and his former wife, Kathleen Trout of Phoenix.

A memorial service will be held March 20 at Mountainview Lutheran Church; 11002 S. 48th St.; Phoenix, AZ 85044; 480-893-2579. A reception will follow at Ahwatukee Country Club;12432 S 48th St.; Phoenix, AZ 85044; (480) 893-1161.

In lieu of flowers, donations should be sent to:
