Cartier Sponsors Santos-Dumont Watch Exhibit

Staff -- JCK Online, 9/1/2002 2:00:00 AM

Cartier this summer sponsored a special exhibition of the Demoiselle ("dragonfly") monoplane, flown by Alberto Santos-Dumont, a Brazilian aviation pioneer who, in 1906, became the first person to fly over Paris. The plane, on loan from the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in Rhinebeck, N.Y., was displayed in the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City during the Jewelers of America summer show in New York (July 28-31). Inside the Concours d'Elegance timepiece pavilion at the show, Cartier presented an exhibit on its famous Cartier Santos watch, the first-ever wristwatch. Also in the watch pavilion was an exhibit marking the 75th anniversary of Charles Lindbergh's nonstop solo flight from New York to Paris in 1927. The exhibit was provided by the new Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City, Long Island, N.Y.
