Gem Pricing Report

By Staff -- JCK Online, 10/1/2007 2:00:00 AM

Dealers report mixed results in the colored stone markets. After declining earlier this summer, gas prices are rising again. Prices of many food products are up significantly, and consumers are hearing reports of home foreclosures. Stringent standards for credit are apparently taking a toll on consumer confidence. As a result, jewelry retailers are cautious.

Heading into the holiday season, wholesalers report only slight improvement in sales during a normally busy time. Initially promising prospects for the season have become less certain in recent weeks. In this environment, customer service will make all the difference when facing jittery buyers with strapped finances.

In the diamond market, business has been picking up as seasonal buying before the holiday season firms. Manufacturers report shortages in promotional-quality diamonds. What has been a general yearlong trend is continuing. Well-made goods of SI1 and better in H or better colors are doing well. Rounds in 0.75 to 1.00 ct. are doing well. Stones of 3.00 cts. and larger are in short supply and prices are strong. In fancies, princesses and cushions are strong, pears and emerald cuts are good.
