Titan Industries plans to close the two Tanishq boutiques it opened in America, according to a report in the Hindu Line.
The company, a leading jewelry retailer in India, opened two stores in July 2008, one in Paramus, New Jersey, and the other in Shaumburg, Ill. The eventual plan was for a nationwide chain.
The plans were announced in a recent company filing. It did not give any reason for the decision, the newspaper said.
The stores evoked the company’s Indian heritage and had collections based around yoga, rain and lotus flowers.

Tanishq had a great idea. They had very unique displays, lovely concepts, a welcoming environment, and small touches that made their approach very modern and artistic. The employees were extremely well informed, pleasant and proud of the company. They had a wonderful head designer, who orchestrated the overall concepts. I consulted with Tanishque and helped them develop the 'new age' environment. My only concern was about the product not being unique enough, or having enough variety. It still gave the impression that it was Indian jewelry. I believe this was part of the reason they did not have great success. The displays were more attractive than the pieces. If you are going to have a truly unique operation, the product has to represent this concept in a dynamic way. Recently, they asked me to review the stores. My comments to the home office were very detailed about assortments, variety , clear lines between each collection, a few grand pieces to draw attention, impact marketing, etc. The traffic at the shopping centers had also dropped off due to the economy and with out the draw, they would not survive in this climate. However, the idea of environment shopping is the future and a good way to build a brand. The statement has to not be tentative.
They should plan to try this again in the future, with a few changes.

The streets paved with gold in the USA may be a little tarnished right now but there's still plenty of gold for the taking, however, it takes more than just showing up! These companies are forgetting the number one rule for success in retail, SURROUND YOURSELF WITH GREAT PEOPLE!
The most important investment they can make is in the people they hire, then everything else will fall in line. The jewelry industry is ripe with seasoned vets such as myself who are unemployed because companies want to save money, but we posses the skills and experience they need and are their only chance for success. I suggest they look elsewhere to cut expenses and hire the best people, it will ultimatley lead to success!!
