Award Winner Donates Prize

Staff -- JCK Online, 6/1/2002 2:00:00 AM

Jewelry designer Marck Schneider, first-place winner in the professional division of the MJSA American Vision Award design competition, recently donated his $1,500 prize to the MJSA Education Foundation. Schneider, owner of Schneider Design Studios in Long Beach, Calif., said he appreciated the Foundation's work and credited the scholarships and awards he had received for developing confidence in his designs.

Schneider's winning piece was a platinum ring featuring white and black diamonds and a black pearl. A photo of the piece, which also can be worn as a pendant, can be seen on the MJSA Web site at www.mjsainc.com.

In other news, MJSA is accepting entries and applications for its 2002 Education Foundation Jewelry Scholarship. Students enrolled in design, metals fabrication, tool making, or other jewelry-related courses of study at colleges, universities, or not-for-profit technical schools can apply for awards ranging from $500 to $2,000.

Applicants must submit slides of finished jewelry pieces they have created, and are then judged by a committee of industry professionals on the basis of their work as well as their course of study, career objectives, financial need, industry experience, academic achievement, and recommendations. Scholarships are renewable for up to four years, provided the student maintains good academic standing.

For information, call MJSA's director of education Mary Walek, (800) 444-6572, ext. 3041, or visit the MJSA Web site at www.mjsainc.com.

MJSA also has created a new manual in response to recent changes in health and safety codes for jewelry manufacturers operating in Los Angeles. Compliance Solutions: Answers to Your Questions About Los Angeles Safety Guideline Requirements is the first component in what will become a nationwide safety outreach program. The publication is designed to help manufacturers comply with the new guidelines and avoid fines.

Compliance Solutions is available free to MJSA members; the cost for non-members is $45. For information, contact director of education Mary Walek, (800) 444-6572, ext. 3041, or e-mail mwalek@mjsainc.com.
