Birks Sees 11 Percent Sales Gain

Birks Group’s U.S. sales grew an impressive 11 percent last holiday, thanks to strong watch sales and higher sales in newly remodeled stores.

Canadian sales were not as strong, logging only 3 percent growth. The increase was driven by an increased number of transactions, plus continued strong demand for watches, jewelry brands, and Birks-branded products. The company’s comps grew 7 percent overall.

The strong holiday spurred even stronger third-quarter results, with comps rising 17 percent in the U.S., 5 percent in Canada, and 11 percent overall. Total net sales for the third quarter increased 3.2 percent, to $97.6 million. The overall sales number came in below the comps because of the weaker Canadian dollar and the closing of four underperforming stores.
