D-Internally Flawless Ear Pendants, Napoleon Emerald Highlight Christie’s Sale

A pair of 20 ct. D-internally flawless ear pendants and an emerald once worn by Napoleon’s wife highlight Christie’s April 16 Magnificent Jewels sale in New York City.

Among the major items offered:

– A Van Cleef & Arpels–designed emerald and diamond brooch. The emerald once adorned the tiara of Marie-Louise, second wife of Napoleon, who presented it to her as part of a matching jewelry set at their 1810 wedding. In 1953, it was sold to Van Cleef.

Christie’s sold the piece, below, in 1999 for $178,500. This time it carries an estimate of $250,000 to $350,000.

– A pair of D-color internally flawless circular-cut diamond ear pendants. One is 22.6 cts.; the other 22.31 cts. They carry a $7 million to $10 million estimate.

– An oval-cut D 40.43 ct. diamond (estimate: $5.8 million to $7.8 million). Its GIA report says it is VVS1, but an accompanying working diagram indicated it might be potentially internally flawless.

– A 50.5 ct. D-flawless briolette-cut diamond (estimate: $5.5 million to $7.5 million).

The sale is expected to earn more than $50 million.
