Cartier Contests World Gold Council’s ‘LoveGold’ Registration

Cartier is telling the World Gold Council: Stop with the name of love.

The famed retailer argued in a Jan. 22 submission before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board that the WGC does not have the right to register LoveGold as a mark, as it conflicts with Cartier’s use of the word Love for its Love bracelet and other products.

Cartier “believes it will be damaged by the issuance of a registration for the marks LoveGold,” the filing said. Cartier has “used the mark LOVE and variations thereof in connection with jewelry since at least as early as 1970.”

At press time, the World Gold Council has not filed a reply. But its lawyer told JCK: “Cartier and WGC are in discussion regarding this issue, and hope to soon amicably resolve their differences.”

The filing objects only to WGC’s attempted trademark registration and does not mean Cartier is contesting use of the term LoveGold for the WGC’s promotional campaign, which was recently nominated for a Jewelry Information Center GEM Award.

Cartier declined further comment.
