Cyber Monday 2013 Expected to Attract 131 Million Shoppers

Even though 141 million Americans spent their Thanksgiving weekend shopping in stores and online, the National Retail Federation expects online sales on Cyber Monday today to be massive—to the tune of more than 131 million shoppers.

“Despite record-breaking online shopping Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday, holiday shoppers aren’t done yet; we expect Cyber Monday to be bigger than ever,” said NRF president and CEO Matthew Shay in a release. In 2012, Cyber Monday counted 129 million consumers. (See the NRF’s detailed release here.)

And expect people to be doing their spending on the go: In an NRF survey conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics, 24.8 million consumers said they planned to shop today with a mobile device—a big bump from 20.4 million in 2012. (Consider that in 2009, mobile Cyber Monday shoppers numbered 3.7 million.)

Asked when they’d be doing their online buying, 43.3 percent of those surveyed said they’d get their shopping done first thing; 19.3 percent will be using their lunch hour; 33 percent plan to wait until early afternoon.

According to Shop.org’s eHoliday survey, more than 80 percent of online retailers will offer specific Cyber Monday deals. Said Shop.org executive director Vicki Cantrell in a release: “Retailers are prepared to pull out all the stops for their Cyber Monday shoppers.”
