A Fred Meyer Jewelers at the South Towne Mall mall in Sandy, Utah, was robbed Jan. 26.

Sandy Police Sgt. Troy Arnold tells JCK that around 11:40 a.m. Jan. 26, a man walked into the store and asked to see a specific piece of jewelry. As the store clerk removed the item from the case, the suspect grabbed it from her hand and ran.

A gun dropped out of his waistband as he fled. Police recovered the weapon and discovered it was a pellet gun, Arnold says.

“He never pulled it out or pointed it at anyone,” Arnold says. No one was injured during the robbery.

The man ran out through the mall parking lot. Police are reviewing surveillance video from a neighboring business. “The suspect was in a well-known clothing store and they became suspicious of his activity, so they started watching him closely with their cameras,” Arnold says.

Arnold says Fred Meyer’s surveillance videos are operated through corporate offices and police will review that tape as soon as it’s made available.
