The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced October 19 that it would not set mandatory limits on the use of cadmium in children’s jewelry, but instead would allow the industry to police itself, according to a news report.

According to a Bloomberg report, the CPSC has asked ASTM International to revise its safety rules to eliminate cadmium from toys and children’s jewelry.  The report stated that if the CSPC found the industry standard-setting body’s rules insufficient, then a mandatory standard would be applied. 

The Fashion Jewelry & Accessories Trade Association’s executive director Brent Cleaveland said in a statement that FJATA had concerns “regarding the validity and practicality of lengthy test times,” but looked forward to continuing to work with the CSPC to “finalize a national, science-based, peer reviewed, standard for children’s jewelry.”
