An exhibition featuring crystallized gold will be on display during the Tucson Gem and Mineral Society Show Feb. 12–15. Arranged by the Gemological Institute of America and the Geo-Literary Society, the exhibition is in honor of the show’s 50th year, and can be viewed at the Tucson Convention Center. Gold is the theme of this year’s golden anniversary show.
Gold is a member of the cubic system of crystallography and, in some rare circumstances, gold can be found displaying the different habits of the cubic system. Examples of gold in the exceptional form of an octahedron, a cube, and a dodecahedron from the collections of F. John Barlow and from the Harvard Mineralogical Museum will be on display.
The exhibit will also includes the Literature of Crystallized Gold—an atlas of crystal forms by the noted scientist Victor Goldschmidt. It is an important early source that brought together examples of crystallized gold, references to the literature and localities for the gold. Scans of his original manuscript provided by Wayne Leicht will be shown.
