Cartier vs. Cartier lawsuit settled

One sells fancy jewelry, the other insurance, but both will use the name Cartier after a lawsuit filed by Cartier International Inc. against Cartier Agency Inc. was settled, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

Cartier International, the internationally known jewelry and fashion giant based in Geneva, had sued the Duluth agency for infringing on its 142-year-old trademarked name, even though the names are pronounced differently.

The Duluth business is pronounced car’-teer; the jewelry-maker goes by car-tee-ay’.

Tom Cartier said Tuesday that the settlement will allow him to do business as Cartier Agency Inc., as he has for the past 23 years, and no money changed hands, the AP reported.
